Quick BTQ 185 DP: specs, price and the boats it fits

The BTQ 185 DP is Quick’s mid-size bow thruster with two propellers instead of one, for boats of about 26 to 50 ft. The second propeller gets more push out of the same size hole in the hull, about 143 to 231 lb on 12 or 24 V. Quick says no other maker offers twin propellers in this tube size. Beneteau fitted the model it replaced, the BTQ 180, on its Swift Trawler 34.

Prices start at $4,826 at Quick’s US store, for the thruster alone. You’ll also need a control panel ($540 for the joystick), the tube ($459) and a fuse with its holder. Plan on about $1,324 to $2,771 more for batteries, cable and a charger. See the cost table below.

Owners say it does the job, with two things worth knowing. One Swift Trawler 34 owner found his older twin-prop unit at the stern outmatched by strong wind on a tall boat. And the motor brushes wear over time, and Hanse owners have had theirs replaced. Quick says the thruster isn’t designed for continuous use, so its panel forces a 20 minute rest after about 5 minutes 40 seconds of running. The warranty is three years.

The full spec sheet for a yard sits lower down, and the Quick thruster review covers Quick’s whole range.

Is it right for your boat?

What Quick says 26 to 39 ft The maker's own range, from its listing
What our sizing says 30 to 42 ft Full thrust in 15 knots. The longest boat of each kind is in the table.

Our figure is the longest boat one unit can steer in a 15 knot wind. It is a range because each kind of boat catches the wind differently. Here a houseboat gets full thrust to 30 ft, and a catamaran to 42 ft. The maker gives one range for every boat.

The table below tries the Quick BTQ 185 DP on each kind of boat, at every length that kind of boat is built in. The wind is 15 knots and the rules are the finder’s own. A length counts as a fit when the unit gives the thrust that boat needs at the bow and the maker lists it for that length.

A boat up to 10 percent past the maker’s range still counts here, as it does in the finder. So the table runs up to 42 ft, just past Quick’s own range (26 to 39 ft).

Pontoon & tritoon Not listed. A pontoon has no hull body between the logs to bore a tunnel through, and nobody sells one for these boats.

Motor yacht 35 to 40 ft 41 to 42 ftfull thrust to about 14 knots at 42 ft

Wake & ski boats Not listed. Nobody sells a tunnel kit for these hulls.
Express cruiser No length. More thrust than the boat needs.
Center console No length. More thrust than the boat needs.

Reading the two length columns. The first column is where one unit gives all the thrust the boat needs in 15 knots. The second is where the finder still lists it: the unit falls short of what the boat needs by no more than 10 percent, and gives the whole figure only in the lighter wind named. On a boat shorter than the first column’s shortest length, the unit is more than the boat needs.

It is sized for five kinds of boat here. For your own boat, the finder gives an answer that also counts your drive and who does the fitting. The compare page sets this unit beside others.

What it costs fitted

These totals are our estimate of a yard job: the unit’s price, plus a yard’s hours at $160 to $180 an hour, plus the batteries, cable and charger, plus the other parts the box does not hold. It is billed separately from the job itself. adds $540 to $2,030 at these lengths, with 5 to 7 days out of the water, worked from eight yards’ own rate cards. What holds up and what to weigh

Each point names the fact it rests on.

What holds up

  • It is sold at 12 V and at 24 V.The maker's and dealers' listings

What to weigh

  • The boat comes out of the water to fit it: it needs a tunnel bore below the waterline. The mounting: a bore through the hull, or a housing recessed into it

What the manual and listings say

This is the note we keep on the Quick BTQ 185 DP, written from the maker’s manual, its product pages and the dealer’s listing.

In the box: The thruster, a drilling template, gasket and O-ring. The TCD panel and the fuse holder are bought.

BTQ 185-65, 65 KGF, double propeller, 12 V

Twin counter-rotating propellers in the same 185 mm tunnel as the single-propeller BTQ 185. The 65 kgf version. The manual prints its thrust as "65 kgf (55.1 lb)", the 25 kgf unit's pounds. The manual gives a 275 A fuse at 12 V and a weight of 17.6 kg.

Its cable is 2/0 for a total run under 5 m (positive plus negative), two 1 AWG per leg to 10 m, two 2/0 AWG per leg to 20 m. At 24 V the fuse is 175 A and the cable 1 AWG, 2/0 and 3/0 by band. The manual prints a fuse and cable sizes but no current draw and no battery figure.

No product page gives a run time. The installation manual says the unit is not designed for continuous use and leaves the limit to the control panel. The panel's own manual cuts the command after about five minutes and resets it after a cool-down the panel computes. The warranty runs three years from purchase, with repair or replacement at Quick's discretion.

The warranty is void for maintenance by anyone Quick has not authorized or for non-original parts. Removal and refitting are at your cost. The price is Quick's US store's own for this size at 12 V, read 12 October.

BTQ 185-65, 65 KGF, double propeller, 24 V

The price is Quick's US store's own for this size at 24 V, read 12 October.

BTQ 185-85, 85 KGF, double propeller, 12 V

The 85 kgf version. The manual gives a 400 A fuse at 12 V and a weight of 17.9 kg. Its cable is two 1 AWG per leg for a total run under 5 m (positive plus negative), two 2/0 AWG per leg to 10 m, two 3/0 AWG per leg to 20 m. At 24 V the fuse is 275 A and the cable 2/0, then two 1 AWG, then two 2/0 per leg.

BTQ 185-105, 105 KGF, double propeller, 12 V

The 105 kgf version, the top of the 185 mm line. The category page puts the whole BTQ 185 DP series on boats of 26 to 50 ft. The band here is the US store's own figure for this version. The manual gives a 400 A fuse at 12 V and a weight of 27.5 kg.

Its cable is two 2/0 AWG per leg for a total run under 5 m (positive plus negative), two 3/0 AWG per leg to 10 m, two 4/0 AWG per leg to 20 m. The tunnel sits at least three quarters of its diameter below the waterline. Once a year the unit comes apart for inspection, anode included.

Quick announced a brushless QSY range in September 2026, rated for ten minutes' continuous running. The QSY range will sit beside this brushed line.

Other sizes and close alternatives

These are Quick’s nearest sizes by thrust, in any of its lines.

  • One size down: Quick BTQ 185, six sizes, 121 to 209 lb, $3,476 to $7,511.
  • One size up: Quick BTQ 250, four sizes, 265 to 529 lb, $8,624 to $10,571.
