Quick BTQ 185: specs, price and the boats it fits

The BTQ 185 is Quick’s mid-size single-propeller bow thruster for boats of about 26 to 49 ft. It sits in a tube through the hull near the bow and comes in three strengths, about 121 to 209 lb of push on 12 or 24 V, so you can match it to your boat. Quick has made thrusters since 2007, and the BTQ name was in its 2012 catalog.

Prices start at $3,950 at Quick’s US store, for the thruster alone. You’ll want a control panel ($465 for the push-button one), the tube ($459 for a short one) and a fuse with its holder. The bigger models need a hefty battery bank. Batteries, cable and a charger add about $1,239 to $2,456, as the extra cost below shows.

Owners of Quick thrusters report two things worth knowing. The motor brushes wear over time, and Hanse owners have had them replaced along with a failed relay. And a long docking in strong wind can trip the overheat protection. Quick says the thruster isn’t made for continuous duty, so its panel stops the motor after about 5 minutes 40 seconds and waits 20 minutes. Quick backs it for three years.

The full spec sheet for a yard sits lower down, and the Quick thruster review covers Quick’s whole range.

What Quick says 26 to 36 ft The maker's own range, from its listing
What our sizing says 37 to 39 ft Full thrust in 15 knots. The longest boat of each kind is in the table.

Our figure is the longest boat one unit can steer in a 15 knot wind. It is a range because each kind of boat catches the wind differently. Here a sailboat gets full thrust to 37 ft, and a catamaran to 39 ft. The maker gives one range for every boat.

The table below tries the Quick BTQ 185 on each kind of boat, at every length that kind of boat is built in. The wind is 15 knots and the rules are the finder’s own. A length counts as a fit when the unit gives the thrust that boat needs at the bow and the maker lists it for that length.

A boat up to 10 percent past the maker’s range still counts here, as it does in the finder. So the table runs up to 39 ft, just past Quick’s own range (26 to 36 ft).

Pontoon & tritoon Not listed. A pontoon has no hull body between the logs to bore a tunnel through, and nobody sells one for these boats.

Center console No length. More thrust than the boat needs.

Reading the two length columns. The first column is where one unit gives all the thrust the boat needs in 15 knots. The second is where the finder still lists it: the unit falls short of what the boat needs by no more than 10 percent, and gives the whole figure only in the lighter wind named. On a boat shorter than the first column’s shortest length, the unit is more than the boat needs.

It is sized for six kinds of boat here. For your own boat, the finder gives an answer that also counts your drive and who does the fitting. The compare page sets this unit beside others.

What it costs fitted

These totals are our estimate of a yard job: the unit’s price, plus a yard’s hours at $160 to $180 an hour, plus the batteries, cable and charger, plus the other parts the box does not hold. It is billed separately from the job itself. adds $540 to $1,880 at these lengths, with 5 to 7 days out of the water, worked from eight yards’ own rate cards. The hours come from what owners and yards report. Your own yard will have its own opinion. The cost page builds the same figures line by line.

What holds up and what to weigh

Each point names the fact it rests on.

What holds up

  • It is sold at 12 V and at 24 V.The maker's and dealers' listings

What to weigh

  • The boat comes out of the water to fit it: it needs a tunnel bore below the waterline. The mounting: a bore through the hull, or a housing recessed into it

What the manual and listings say

This is the note we keep on the Quick BTQ 185, written from the maker’s manual, its product pages and the dealer’s listing.

In the box: The thruster, a drilling template, gasket and O-ring. The TCD panel and the fuse holder are bought.

BTQ 185-55, 55 KGF, single propeller, 12 V

Single propeller in a 185 mm tunnel. Quick is the brand Beneteau, Jeanneau and Hanse fit at the factory, so most owners meet it without having chosen it. The category page puts the whole BTQ 185 series on boats of 26 to 50 ft. The band here is the US store's own figure for this version.

The manual gives a 250 A fuse at 12 V and a weight of 16.7 kg. Its cable is 1 AWG for a total run under 5 m (positive plus negative), 2/0 to 10 m, 3/0 to 20 m. At 24 V the fuse is 150 A and the cable one size down in every band.

The manual prints a fuse and cable sizes but no current draw and no battery figure. No product page gives a run time. The installation manual says the unit is not designed for continuous use and leaves the limit to the control panel. The panel's own manual cuts the command after about five minutes and resets it after a cool-down the panel computes.

The tunnel sits at least three quarters of its diameter below the waterline. Once a year the unit comes apart for inspection, anode included. The warranty runs three years from purchase, with repair or replacement at Quick's discretion. The warranty is void for maintenance by anyone Quick has not authorized or for non-original parts. Removal and refitting are at your cost.

Quick announced a brushless QSY range in September 2026, rated for ten minutes' continuous running. The QSY range will sit beside this brushed line. The price is Quick's US store, $3,475.85 at 24 V and $3,949.57 at 12 V, read 11 October. The price is Quick's US store's own for this size at 12 V, read 12 October.

The price is Quick's US store's own for this size at 24 V, read 12 October.

BTQ 185-75, 75 KGF, single propeller, 12 V

The 75 kgf BTQ 185, single propeller. The manual gives a 350 A fuse at 12 V and a weight of 17.0 kg. Its cable is 2/0 for a total run under 5 m (positive plus negative), two 1 AWG per leg to 10 m, two 2/0 AWG per leg to 20 m. At 24 V the fuse is 250 A and the cable 1 AWG, 2/0 and 3/0 by band.

BTQ 185-95, 95 KGF, single propeller, 12 V

The biggest single-propeller Quick, 95 kgf in a 185 mm tunnel. The manual gives a 350 A fuse at 12 V and a weight of 26.6 kg. Its cable is two 1 AWG per leg for a total run under 5 m (positive plus negative), two 2/0 AWG per leg to 10 m, two 3/0 AWG per leg to 20 m.

Other sizes and close alternatives

These are Quick’s next sizes in the same line, by thrust.

  • One size down: Quick BTQ 125, two sizes, 66 to 88 lb, $2,511 to $2,754.
  • One size up: Quick BTQ 250, four sizes, 265 to 529 lb, $8,624 to $10,571.
