Quick BTQ 250: specs, price and the boats it fits

The BTQ 250 is Quick’s big-boat bow thruster, for boats of about 42 to 69 ft. Two propellers spin in a large tube through the hull near the bow, giving about 265 to 529 lb of push depending on the size you choose. Quick has built thrusters since 2007.

Quick’s US store sells it from $8,624, for the thruster alone. Expect to spend another $540 on Quick’s joystick, plus the tube (from $941) and a heavy-duty fuse holder ($209). The two bigger models run on 24 V only, and the batteries, cable and charger for them come to about $2,322 to $2,771 more.

One question to put to Quick before you order: by its own figures, the largest model makes far more push for its power than the middle one. The parts that wear are the motor brushes and the drive coupling, which Quick sells for this size at $395. Quick says the thruster isn’t for continuous use, and the panel holds it to about 5 minutes 40 seconds of running, then 20 minutes off. The warranty is three years.

Installers will find the wiring figures and dimensions further down. For the rest of Quick’s line, read the Quick thruster review.

Is it right for your boat?

What Quick says 42 to 55 ft The maker's own range, from its listing
What our sizing says 41 to 60 ft Full thrust in 15 knots. The longest boat of each kind is in the table.

Our figure is the longest boat one unit can steer in a 15 knot wind. It is a range because each kind of boat catches the wind differently. Here a houseboat gets full thrust to 41 ft, and a catamaran to 60 ft. The maker gives one range for every boat.

The table below tries the Quick BTQ 250 on each kind of boat, at every length that kind of boat is built in. The wind is 15 knots and the rules are the finder’s own. A length counts as a fit when the unit gives the thrust that boat needs at the bow and the maker lists it for that length.

A boat up to 10 percent past the maker’s range still counts here, as it does in the finder. So the table runs down to 38 ft and up to 60 ft, just past Quick’s own range (42 to 55 ft).

Wake & ski boats Not listed. Nobody sells a tunnel kit for these hulls.
Express cruiser 58 to 60 ft None
Center console No length. More thrust than the boat needs.

Reading the two length columns. The first column is where one unit gives all the thrust the boat needs in 15 knots. The second is where the finder still lists it: the unit falls short of what the boat needs by no more than 10 percent, and gives the whole figure only in the lighter wind named. On a boat shorter than the first column’s shortest length, the unit is more than the boat needs.

It is sized for six kinds of boat here. For your own boat, the finder gives an answer that also counts your drive and who does the fitting. The compare page sets this unit beside others.

What it costs fitted

These totals are our estimate of a yard job: the unit’s price, plus a yard’s hours at $160 to $180 an hour, plus the batteries, cable and charger, plus the other parts the box does not hold. A Lifting the boat out of the water on a travel lift or a trailer so work can be done below the waterline. It is billed separately from the job itself. adds $680 to $2,900 at these lengths, with 5 to 7 days out of the water, worked from eight yards’ own rate cards. The hours come from what owners and yards report. Your own yard will have its own opinion. The cost page builds the same figures line by line.

The tunnel
Tunnel length The optimal length is three to four times the tube diameter. A ratio of up to six can be tolerated. Longer tubes lose more of the thrust to friction. Quick’s installation manual
Depth below the waterline In the bow and as low as possible, at least 0.75 times the tunnel diameter below the waterline, to avoid cavitation at the propeller. BTQ250 and BTQ300 installation manual, REV006C

What holds up and what to weigh

Each point names the fact it rests on.

What holds up

  • It is sold at 12 V and at 24 V.The maker's and dealers' listings

What to weigh

  • The boat comes out of the water to fit it: it needs a tunnel bore below the waterline. The mounting: a bore through the hull, or a housing recessed into it

What the manual and listings say

This is the note we keep on the Quick BTQ 250, written from the maker’s manual, its product pages and the dealer’s listing.

In the box: The thruster, a drilling template, gasket and O-ring. The TCD panel and the fuse holder are bought.

BTQ 250-120, 120 KGF, double propeller, 12 V

Twin counter-rotating propellers in a 250 mm tunnel. This is the 120 kgf version, the only one sold at 12 V. The category page puts the whole BTQ 250 series on boats of 39 to 69 ft. The band here is the US store's own figure for this version. The manual gives a 500 A fuse at 12 V and a weight of 35.5 kg.

Its cable is two 2/0 AWG per leg for a total run under 5 m (positive plus negative), two 3/0 AWG per leg to 10 m, two 4/0 AWG per leg to 20 m. At 24 V the fuse is 275 A and the cable 2/0, then two 1 AWG, then two 2/0 per leg.

The newer BTQ250/300 manual prints one size per model with no run length, smaller than the older manual's long band. The published thrust reads "120 Kgf (308/ lb)", the 140's pounds against the 120's kgf, kept as printed. The manual prints a fuse and cable sizes but no current draw and no battery figure. No product page gives a run time.

The installation manual says the unit is not designed for continuous use and leaves the limit to the control panel. The panel's own manual cuts the command after about five minutes and resets it after a cool-down the panel computes. The tunnel sits at least three quarters of its diameter below the waterline. Once a year the unit comes apart for inspection, anode included.

The warranty runs three years from purchase, with repair or replacement at Quick's discretion. The warranty is void for maintenance by anyone Quick has not authorized or for non-original parts. Removal and refitting are at your cost. Quick announced a brushless QSY range in September 2026, rated for ten minutes' continuous running. The QSY range will sit beside this brushed line. The price is Quick's US store's own for this size at 12 V, read 12 October.

BTQ 250-120, 120 KGF, double propeller, 24 V

The price is Quick's US store's own for this size at 24 V, read 12 October.

BTQ 250-140, 140 KGF, double propeller, 24 V

The 140 kgf BTQ 250, twin counter-rotating propellers, 24 V only. The manual gives a 275 A fuse at 24 V and a weight of 34.2 kg. Its cable is 2/0 for a total run under 5 m (positive plus negative), two 1 AWG per leg to 10 m, two 2/0 AWG per leg to 20 m. The manual prints the same 34.2 kg for this and the 24 V 120 kgf unit.

BTQ 250-240, 240 KGF, double propeller, 24 V

The 240 kgf BTQ 250, twin counter-rotating propellers, 24 V only. On the manual's own figures it makes far more thrust per kilowatt than the 140 kgf unit below it (24 kgf per kW against 17.5). The manual gives a 500 A fuse at 24 V and a weight of 49.1 kg.

Its cable is two 1 AWG per leg for a total run under 5 m (positive plus negative), two 2/0 AWG per leg to 10 m, two 3/0 AWG per leg to 20 m. The newer BTQ250/300 manual prints "(2 x AWG 3/0)" in this model's fuse cell.
