Quick BTQ 185 DC + cover: specs, price and the boats it fits

This listing on Quick’s US store pairs a BTQ 185 bow thruster with a cover. You can pick one propeller or two, with about 121 to 187 lb of push on 12 V, starting at $4,562. The thruster itself is the same BTQ 185 or BTQ 185 DP that Quick sells on its own, from a maker in the thruster business since 2007.

At the same push, the cover version costs more than the plain unit, so ask Quick USA what the cover adds before you pay the difference. Either way the control panel, tube and fuse are bought separately, and Quick’s joystick alone is $540. Batteries, cable and a charger come to about $1,239 to $1,773 more. What else to buy is listed below.

The motor brushes and the drive coupling are the parts that wear on Quick’s 185 units, and Quick asks for a yearly strip-down with a new zinc. Quick says the thruster isn’t designed for nonstop running. The panel ends any run of about 5 minutes 40 seconds and blocks the thruster for 20 minutes while it cools. The three-year warranty needs service from someone Quick has authorized.

Fitting it yourself? The installer section has every spec, and the Quick thruster review sets this model against the rest of the Quick range.

What Quick says 26 to 36 ft The maker's own range, from its listing
What our sizing says 37 to 39 ft Full thrust in 15 knots. The longest boat of each kind is in the table.

Our figure is the longest boat one unit can steer in a 15 knot wind. It is a range because each kind of boat catches the wind differently. Here a sailboat gets full thrust to 37 ft, and a catamaran to 39 ft. The maker gives one range for every boat.

The table below tries the Quick BTQ 185 DC Bow Thruster + cover on each kind of boat, at every length that kind of boat is built in. The wind is 15 knots and the rules are the finder’s own. A length counts as a fit when the unit gives the thrust that boat needs at the bow and the maker lists it for that length.

A boat up to 10 percent past the maker’s range still counts here, as it does in the finder. So the table runs up to 39 ft, just past Quick’s own range (26 to 36 ft).

Reading the two length columns. The first column is where one unit gives all the thrust the boat needs in 15 knots. The second is where the finder still lists it: the unit falls short of what the boat needs by no more than 10 percent, and gives the whole figure only in the lighter wind named. On a boat shorter than the first column’s shortest length, the unit is more than the boat needs.

It is sized for six kinds of boat here. For your own boat, the finder gives an answer that also counts your drive and who does the fitting. The compare page sets this unit beside others.

What it costs fitted

These totals are our estimate of a yard job: the unit’s price, plus a yard’s hours at $160 to $180 an hour, plus the batteries, cable and charger, plus the other parts the box does not hold. A Lifting the boat out of the water on a travel lift or a trailer so work can be done below the waterline. It is billed separately from the job itself. adds $540 to $2,650 at these lengths, with 5 to 7 days out of the water, worked from eight yards’ own rate cards. The hours come from what owners and yards report. Your own yard will have its own opinion. The cost page builds the same figures line by line.

How the batteries, cable and charger add up. We price a battery bank close to the thruster, as the makers recommend, with 10 to 20 ft of cable out and back: red for the positive, black for the negative, cut to length. The low end is the cheapest battery that meets the figure and the shorter run; the high end is a sealed (AGM) battery and the longer run. The charger is a NOCO GEN5X2 two-bank shore charger.

Batteries and lugs are priced at Fisheries Supply and the cable and charger at Defender, read 12 October 2026.

  • At 12 V: one 12 V battery, at least 1,000 CCA and 200 Ah (Quick’s minimum), $998 for the battery; Quick’s cable table gives 2 x 1/0 to 2 x 3/0 AWG, priced on 4/0 to 2 x 4/0 AWG, the nearest size cut to length: $180 to $629 for the red and black cable and the lugs; a GEN5X2 charger, $146.

What else you buy

What follows comes from Quick’s BTQ Series installation manual REV 005A and the TCD control manual, September 2025, read 30 September 2026.

In the box
The thruster with its reversing contactor and anode, a drilling template, gasket, O-ring, the manual.
Bought separately
"Recommended Quick accessories not included": the TCD control panels, the line switch, the THF fuse holder. Plus the fuse, the cable, a battery disconnection switch, a 4 A control fuse and switch, the tube.
Charging
The manual gives a battery table by model, in amp-hours and cold cranking amps, and a diagram with the panel on the service battery. It says nothing about how the thruster bank is charged.

The manual’s words, page 10: “Standard supply and material included in the package: Thruster, Drilling template, Gasket, O-ring, Installation and use manual, Conditions of warranty.”

The “other parts” line in the estimate above is the priced parts below, $541 to $1,369 at Fisheries Supply’s prices on 30 September 2026. The batteries, cable and charger have a line of their own.

What to weigh

Each point names the fact it rests on.

What to weigh

  • The boat comes out of the water to fit it: it needs a tunnel bore below the waterline. The mounting: a bore through the hull, or a housing recessed into it

What the manual and listings say

This is the note we keep on the Quick BTQ 185 DC Bow Thruster + cover, written from the maker’s manual, its product pages and the dealer’s listing.

In the box: The thruster, a drilling template, gasket and O-ring. The TCD panel and the fuse holder are bought.

BTQ 185 + cover, 55 KGF, single propeller, 12 V

A BTQ 185 sold with a cover on Quick's US store: the single-propeller 55 kgf version at 12 V. That list matches neither the line's single-propeller 55, 75 and 95 nor its twin 65, 85 and 105. The row carries the smallest. The same units are on the BTQ 185 and BTQ 185 DP rows with the manual's figures. No product page gives a run time.

The installation manual says the unit is not designed for continuous use and leaves the limit to the control panel. The panel's own manual cuts the command after about five minutes and resets it after a cool-down the panel computes. The price is Quick's US store's own for this size at 12 V, read 12 October.

Other sizes and close alternatives

These are Quick’s nearest sizes by thrust, in any of its lines.

  • One size down: Quick BTQ 125, two sizes, 66 to 88 lb, $2,511 to $2,754.
  • One size up: Quick BTQ 185, six sizes, 121 to 209 lb, $3,476 to $7,511.

These are other makers’ units of the same style, for the same end, within a quarter of its published thrust. Each is that maker’s nearest match.
